Bells ISD was selected to participate in Project STEEM at TAMU-Commerce. Bells was one of ten districts participating in the project for the fall semester. The project is designed to interest students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Education and Math beyond high school. Six students from Pritchard Junior High and Bells High School, along with two science teachers recently attended a two week science camp at Commerce. The X-TEEMS Academy introduced students to these academics with activities that included robotics, geocaching, circuitry, kites, hovercrafts, sessions with various engineers, different physics and chemistry experiments (including how to karate chop a board), a trip to Campbell Soup and many other hands on activities. All activities were taught by TAMU professors and gave students an introduction to college life. The different sessions exposed the students to equipment and facilities not available at a small school. Teachers attended many of the activities, and also were given guidelines for project based learning. The team was given a stipend to develop or build a project that will be exhibited in December at the college. Projects are a team effort with all students working together. Ideas for projects are sparked by the activities students have participated in. The students, after much brain-storming, decided they were interested in hovercrafts. They presented their plan to the X-Teem Academy and will begin their research on the principles of a hovercraft and will build a hovercraft to present in December. The team is also excited about the prospect of teaching the science of hovercrafts to a class at the elementary. Project Steem has been a 3 year project generously funded by the Greater Texas Foundation to promote interest and learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math with a focus on rural school districts. The Bells team had a great learning experience; we are excited and ready to begin work on our project. |
